Must-do’s before starting a job search

Many of us make New Years’ resolutions. A lot of them range to the typical: Eat healthier, do more exercise, or spend more time with your family are a few popular examples. While each is noble in an of their own right, they are not tangible resolutions. Without tangible resolutions we have no accountability which sets us up for failure.

Goal oriented tangible resolutions are much more attainable because they are results driven. For example, eating healthier could a commitment to set a caloric intake limit or set an intermittent daily fasting period. Exercising could be a goal to run a 5k under 30 minutes. Spending time with your family could be committing to a family vacation for 1 full week.

Thus, in the spirit of tangible goals, what if your resolution is to find a new job?

How to follow up after an interview

Congratulations! You applied for the job, passed the phone screening and have just completed the face to face interview.

It feels like you have really accomplished something; then a few days pass…then a week. Now it’s been 2 weeks. You thought the interview went well and that you had nailed it. But you haven’t heard a damn thing in 15 days now.

What is the protocol? Should you call? Should you wait another week? Maybe you should have already called a week ago? Perhaps an e-mail? What if I could tell you that there is a way that you can avoid some of this uncertainty and get a read on if you are a strong candidate or not? And it can be accomplished by asking one question at the end of the interview:

Sometimes, you just gotta GTFO. Maybe your town has hit hard times, maybe you want to live in a place that is more fast pace, rural, better nightlife, good schools, lesser commute or maybe there just are very few jobs in your area of expertise. If you are a Marine Biologist living in North Platte, Nebraska or an Polar Bear Veterinarian in Boca Raton, Florida then I don’t imagine that your job prospects are looking too rosy.

Almost every interview starts off with the same questions:

“Did you find the office okay?”
“Would you like some coffee / water?”
“Did you just fart?”

Let’s move a little farther into the future. The room has been cleared or maybe an ambulance has been called, but in any case now it’s time to answer some real questions.
